This course is ideal for you if you are working as a Building Services Design Technician or associated role, providing assistance to engineers and other construction professionals in the installation commissioning or servicing of environmental technologies on construction projects and are based on construction sites with occasional time in offices. Main duties and tasks of a Building Services Engineering Technician include supervision of the installation and specialist contractors, assisting design teams, control of health and safety and quality of work, recording and reporting progress,
Compliance and minimisation of the environmental impact of a construction project.
You will study the knowledge, skills and behaviours as set out in apprenticeship standard which will include the Edexcel BTEC Level 4 HNC in Construction Building Services (either Electrical or Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning). The mandatory core units for this consist of

? Science Principles for Building Services
? Construction Practice and Management
? Mathematics for construction
A total of eight units are needed to complete the HNC, the remainder units may include:
? Principles of Electrical Design and Installation
? Principles of Heating Services Design and Installation
? Principles of Ventilation and Air Conditioning Design and Installation
? Principles of Alternative Energy
You will also complete an NVQ (Construction and Building Services Management and Supervision (Sustainability)) and create a portfolio of information to enable you to show your development at work with the skills and behaviours specified in the standard.
This course will be delivered in partnership with your employer, one day in College at the Blossomfield Road Campus with the remainder of the week spent in your place of work under the direction of your employer.
The work in College it is predominantly classroom based with units such as the project taking place in a suitable location.
On completion of the apprenticeship the apprentice will have satisfied the requirements for registration as an Engineering Technician by the relevant professional engineering institution in accordance with the requirements of the Engineering Council as the registration body.
You may also gain:
? Level 4 Edexcel BTEC HNC in Construction (Building Services - either Electrical or Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.) (technical certificate)
? Level 4 Construction and Building Services Management and Supervision (Sustainability) (NVQ)
? Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (If required)
The part of your Apprenticeship that you follow at College is assessed through written assignments and some practical observations. The part of your apprenticeship which is followed in the workplace will be reviewed during regular visits by a college reviewer.
Completion will be achieved by successfully passing the End Point Assessment with a relevant professional organisation (e.g. Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers). This will consist of a presentation and structured interview.

You will have reached the minimum age of 18 and will have at least one of the following qualifications:
4 GCSEs grade C or level 4 and above, plus
1 A Level, or 2AS Levels (40 points),
or BTEC National in a relevant construction/engineering qualification,
or an equivalent qualification
Students with existing level 4/5 qualifications may be eligible for some accreditation for prior learning which can be discussed on an individual basis.
Mature students, over the age of 21, with a suitable background or experience may be accepted without formal qualifications. If unsure please come and talk to us. Admission procedures are flexible and friendly.
All students will be invited to interview before an offer is made.
This course is a part time program and you will be expected to attend 1 day per week between the hours of 9-5, timetables will be issued to successful applicants prior to induction and enrolment in September of the current Academic year.
There are no direct additional costs for this course but you may want to purchase some text books for further reading, a suggested reading list will be supplied at the beginning of your course. We have a wide selection of library books and electronic books for you to use for this course. You will be expected to supply your own stationery such as folders, paper and pens. A scientific calculator is required and a set of mathematical instruments including a
protractor and compass. Connection to the internet is expected, but facilities are available at College to do this if necessary. You need to provide your own safety boots and High visibility jacket suitable for use on highways (i.e. yellow not orange). You will be expected to provide your own transport to site visits but these are usually local with the furthest to attend laboratory trips or local building sites
Additional costs
Costs depend on the direction and ambition of your work. We suggest budgeting approximately £250 for materials and work-books in the first year.
Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you can:
- Continue with employment in the Industry
Or
- Progress onto an HND in Building Services, or it is often possible to gain entrance to the second year, of a three-year degree
