This qualification is for learners wanting to learn the basic skills and knowledge involved in plumbing. What does the qualification cover? The qualification covers a range of basic tasks and underpinning knowledge involved in plumbing.
it allows learners to progress to the City & Guilds qualifications; Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing Studies (6035-02), or to the Apprenticeship Standards if a learner progresses to an Apprenticeship program.
During the course you will study the following:
o Structure of the construction industry
o Health and safety & Fundamental safe working practices
o Environmental and sustainability measures in domestic dwellings
o Site preparation for working in the construction industry
o Above ground drainage
o Copper pipework
o Plastic pressure pipework
o Low carbon steel pipework
o Installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems
o Plumbing science 4
The course involves practical work and assignments that are undertaken in the workshop. The workshop-based aspect of the course involves progressing through a variety of task set out within a training task manual. This training prepares learners for their Practical Assessment tasks.
There are also classroom-based theory lessons that are focused on delivering the theory and underpinning knowledge to enable learners to prepare for their Knowledge Assessments. The Knowledge Assessments are paper based assessments that accompany each unit.
The course delivers the basic skills and knowledge required to start to progress towards a trade recognised qualification within the plumbing industry.
City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Plumbing Studies
There are 10 mandatory units to complete within the qualification - Each of the 10 units has a Knowledge Assessment that is a paper-based assessment. This assesses the learner's underpinning knowledge of the topics in each unit.
8 of the 10 units each have a series of Practical Training tasks to prepare learners to undertake the Practical Assessment tasks. Each of the practical assessments is graded by the tutor/assessor.
Complete the college application form and undertake an interview.
GCSE grade 3 in Mathematics and English and be genuinely interested in the construction industry. Entry will be subject to a satisfactory reference and interview.
You should have an interest in Plumbing Studies and be able to work with your hands in a safe manner. You will be required to provide safety boots and appropriate clothing to wear in the workshop, and your own appropriate study equipment. Task Manuals and course materials are supplied by the College, which will need to be completed by you, the candidate. If you haven't achieved a minimum GCSE grade C/4 in English and/or Maths, or a level 2 Functional skill in these subjects, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades.
If you successfully pass this course, and achieve the required GCSE Maths and English grades, then you can apply to progress on to progress onto the City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing Studies (6035). Learners who have a proven high standard of attendance and demonstrated a positive attitude can be recommended for any apprenticeship opportunities that may arise.
