If you aspire to work as a technician in the motor vehicle repair industry, fixing and servicing a variety of vehicles, this Level 1 course is designed to introduce you to the various components and systems familiar in the sector, and will teach you how to identify problems and repair them.
The course will teach you how a car works and will include the following topics;
- Health & safety for car mechanics
- Chassis components
- Engines and components
- Transmissions / clutch and gearbox
- Vehicle electrics
- Vehicle braking systems
- Vehicle exhaust
- Wheels and tyres
Half of this course involves practical hands-on work in a real motor vehicle workshops and the other half is based in the classroom. The motor vehicle facilities consist of a vehicle garage with real cars and components.
ABC Diploma in Motor Vehicle Studies
To pass this course your assessment is via practical assignments and a completed course work portfolio. There are no external exams.
Places are offered by interview.
2 GCSEs at grade E / grade 2 or above including Maths and English, a suitable reference and a successful interview.
You will be required to purchase:-
- Safety footwear and overalls are a MUST for workshop activities.
- Pens and Note Pads.
- Educational trips to motor vehicle related companies.
Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success in your course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes.
If you haven't achieved an A*/9 - C/74 grade in English or Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skill, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades.
If you are successful on this course you will be able to continue studying towards Level 2 in Motor Vehicle Studies.

Job holders in this unit group construct and repair the bodies of road vehicles, and fit interior and exterior fittings to vehicle bodies.
