Our supported internships are structured study programmes based primarily at a local employer. They are designed to enable young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to achieve sustainable, paid employment by equipping them with the skills they need for work through learning in the workplace.
The roles available are varied and include hospitality, catering, office work and warehousing. Each young person will have access to a job coach who is fully trained to support on the job training as well as deal with any concerns the employer or young person may have.
Students will complete a personalised study programme which may include maths, English and qualifications that are relevant and enhance the work placement.
Internships last for an academic year and include an unpaid work placement for 3 or 4 days per week and 1 day at college. All young people will be supported by a job coach whilst on work placement - the coach will provide in-work support that will taper off as individuals become familiar with their roles.
There will be an opportunity to study for relevant qualifications, if suitable, and English and maths to an appropriate level.
Methods of assessment will vary depending on the qualifications taken to support the work placement.
Please complete an application form and you will be invited in for an interview.
There are no formal qualifications required. We will assess support needs and levels at interview to ensure you are placed with an appropriate employer.
Most of your time on a supported internship will be spent at an employer's premises.
You will be expected to comply with real job conditions such as time-keeping and dress codes.
You will be supported through-out the programme by your tutor and job-coach
You will be given support to access paid employment at the end of the programme.
Supported internships are a government programme that has been developed to support young people with Education, Health and Care plans into employment.
On completion of the programme students may decide to apply for employment or for further studies at the college.
