This course is ideal for you if you are working as a Civil Engineering Technician or associated role, carrying out design, development, construction, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of the built environment and infrastructure. Technicians will be required to have a broad skills base to work in areas which include sustainable construction, structural integrity, geotechnics, materials, tunnelling, marine and coastal engineering, water, waste management, flood management, transportation and power. carrying out civil engineering tasks, developing and finalising civil engineering solutions, establishing and implementing health and safety for civil engineering personnel.
This apprenticeship standard will develop your knowledge and prepare you for a career in the Industry or progression onto an HNC/HND or Degree level course.
Skills, knowledge and behaviours as set out in apprenticeship standard which will include the 12 credits from following 10 units of the BTech Level 3 Civil Engineering Diploma.
Subjects you study include: - Seven mandatory units.
- Construction Principles (double credit with exam in January of first year)
- Construction Design (double credit with exam in April/May of first year)
- Construction Technology
- Health and Safety in Construction
- Site Engineering for Construction
- Further Mathematics for Construction
- Construction in Civil Engineering
You will study a further three Specialist units which are selected to provide students with a broad knowledge of Civil Engineering, an example of which are (some changes may be made to these units to accommodate staff specialisms and timetabling):
- Surveying in Construction
- Graphical Detailing in Construction
- Principles and Applications of Structural Mechanics
This course will be delivered in partnership with your employer, one day in College at the Blossomfield Road Campus with the remainder of the week spent in your place of work under the direction of your employer. The work in College it is predominantly classroom based with units such as Surveying taking place in part outside and drawing units delivered in a design classroom. There will also be some lab sessions to support learning.
On completion of the apprenticeship the apprentice will have satisfied the requirements for registration as an Engineering Technician by the relevant professional engineering institution in accordance with the requirements of the Engineering Council as the registration body.

The part of your Apprenticeship that you follow at College is assessed through examinations, controlled assignments, written assignments and practical observations. (Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering)
The part of your apprenticeship which is followed in the workplace will be reviewed during regular visits by a college reviewer.
Completion will be achieved my successfully passing the End Point Assessment with a relevant professional organisation (e.g. Institution of Civil Engineers). This will consist of a presentation and structured interview.

You must be employed as indicated above.
You need a minimum of four GCSEs at Grade A/8 - C/4 including Mathematics & English Language or an equivalent qualification such as a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction or Engineering at Merit or Distinction Level.
Mature students, over the age of 21, with a suitable background or experience may be accepted without formal qualifications. If unsure please come and talk to us. Admission procedures are flexible and friendly.
All students will be invited to interview before an offer is made.
This course is a part time program and you will be expected to attend 1 day per week between the hours of 9-6, timetables will be issued to successful applicants prior to induction and enrolment in September of the current Academic year.
There are no direct additional costs for this course but you may want to purchase some text books for further reading, a suggested reading list will be supplied at the beginning of your course. We have a wide selection of library books and electronic books for you to use for this course. You will be expected to supply your own stationery such as folders, paper and pens. A scientific calculator is required and a set of mathematical instruments including a protractor and compass. Connection to the internet is expected, but facilities are available at College to do this if necessary. You need to provide your own safety boots and High visibility jacket suitable for use on site. You will be expected to provide your own transport to site visits but these are usually local to attend laboratory trips or local building sites
Additional costs
Costs depend on the direction and ambition of your work. We suggest budgeting approximately £250 for materials and work-books in the first year.
Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you can:
- Continue with employment in the Industry
Or
- Progress onto a Higher Apprenticeship, HNC/HND in Civil Engineering, or a Foundation Degree in Construction/ Civil Engineering.
