This course is ideal for you if you are currently working as an Engineering Design & Draughtsperson in the built environment, or have an associated role that provides assistance to other engineering and construction professionals.
Engineering design and draughtspersons produce designs and drawings for structures, piping, electrical systems, control and instrumentation systems and mechanical components used in industrial and commercial construction. Typically, jobholders work in a wide range of industries of national importance including power and water infrastructure, petrochemical, oil and gas, nuclear, food and drink processing.
Jobholders are based at office locations within project design teams and occasionally work at on-site locations. They are required to understand on-site hazards and health and safety requirements.
The jobholder must: Understand technical drawings and specifications and be able to create their own; identify factors likely to affect design decisions; produce CAD (computer aided design) models and engineering drawings and; be able to communicate design information to internal and external parties.
You will study the knowledge, skills and behaviours as set out within the apprenticeship standard, which will include the following subjects…
? Relevant national and industry health and safety, standards and legislation and those relevant to the specific disciplines, as appropriate
? Company management systems, policies and procedures
? Document management and change control
? Engineering codes and standards
? Common engineering principles and the application of maths and science to engineering
? Fundamentals of engineering drawing and design
? Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, its appropriate application including 2D and 3D modelling
? Understand the impact of relevant factors that are important to the design e.g. the context in which you are working, the materials, components, assemblies, cost, quality, safety, security, risk, environmental impact, ergonomics, aesthetics, the end use and purpose of the design
? Manufacturing and/or construction methods as appropriate to the specific disciplines
? Relevance and application of Building Information Modelling (BIM)
This course will be delivered in partnership with your employer, where you attend college day-release at our Blossomfield Campus and spend the remainder of your working week in your place of work and under the direction of your employer.
The day in college is predominantly classroom-based; however, project units may take place in a more suitable location.
Upon completion of the apprenticeship, the apprentice will have satisfied the requirements for registration as an Engineering Technician by the relevant professional engineering institution and in accordance with the requirements of the Engineering Council, as the registration body.

? Level 3 Vocational Diploma (relevant to your role)
? Level 2 Functional Skills Maths and English (if required)
The apprenticeship content that you will cover at college is assessed through examinations, controlled assessments, written assignments and practical observations. The work-based element of your apprenticeship will be reviewed during regular visits from a college-allocated assessor coach.
Completion will be achieved by successfully passing the End Point Assessment (EPA) with a relevant professional organisation (e.g. National Open College Network). This will consist of a presentation and structured interview.

You must be employed in a relevant field (as indicated above) for a minimum of 30 hours per week.
You typically need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 9/A* to 4/C, including Maths, English Language and ICT; alternatively, you should possess an equivalent qualification, such as a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction or Engineering, at Merit or Distinction Level.
If you are a mature student over the age of 21 with an associated background and/or previous experience, you may be accepted without formal qualifications.

This course is a part-time programme and you will be expected to attend 1 day per week, between the hours of 09:00 and 18:00. Timetables will be issued to successful applicants prior to induction and enrolment, at the beginning of the course.
There are no direct additional costs for this course, but you may want to purchase some text books for further reading. A suggested reading list will be supplied at the beginning of your course; however, we also have a wide selection of library books and electronic books for you to use too. You will be expected to supply your own stationery, such as folders, pens and paper. A scientific calculator is required and a set of mathematical instruments, including a protractor and compass. Connection to the internet is expected, but facilities are available at college to do this if necessary. You need to provide your own safety boots and high visibility jacket, suitable for use on
highways (i.e. yellow not orange). You will also be expected to provide your own transport to site visits, but these are usually local building sites - The furthest trips to attend are for laboratories.
Costs depend on the direction and ambition of your work. We suggest budgeting approximately £250 for materials and work-books in the first year.
