This apprenticeship in leadership and management course will lead to the achievement of Level 5 Diploma for Managers. It is aimed at providing learners working in an organisation with the Leadership and management knowledge and skills required to progress in their career and on to further study.
When taken as part of the Operations/Departmental Manager apprenticeship standard, the aim of this qualification is to support preparation for the End Point Assessment (EPA).
On completion, you may choose to register as Associate members with the Chartered Management Institute and/or the Institute of Leadership & Management, to support your professional career development and progression.
You will be required to study the knowledge, skills and behaviours which are essential in first line management including:
- Interpersonal excellence - managing people and developing relationships
- Organisations performance - delivering results
- Personal effectiveness - managing self
You may be required to study GCSE in Maths and English depending on your previous achievements.

The leadership and management apprenticeship course is delivered through a combination of classroom teaching, practical workshops and independent learning/self- study.
You will attend college for 6 hours of study fortnightly and carry out the equivalent time in self study in the intervening weeks.
As an apprentice a vast amount of learning takes place 'on the job' through training and the practical application of your skills, knowledge and behaviours.
You will receive 1:1 support and coaching from an allocated assessor who will visit you in the workplace every six to eight weeks.
Upon successful completion of the gateway and end point assessment you will be awarded the Level 5 Diploma in Management and meet the requirements of the Operations/Departmental Manager apprenticeship standard with a Pass, Merit or Distinction.
Your progress and development will be assessed at regular stages throughout the apprenticeship - this is likely to be a combination of assignments, activities, professional discussions and observations in the workplace.
Your employer and training provider will formally sign-off your readiness for the end assessment when you have met and can confidently apply the minimum requirements of skills, knowledge and behaviours as detailed in the apprenticeship standard.
The end leadership and management apprenticeship assessment consists of the following 5 components and can be taken after a minimum of 12 months of on-programme learning.

The entry requirement for this apprenticeship in leadership and management will be decided by each employer, but may typically be five GCSEs at Grade C/4 or higher including English & Maths.
