A Digital Media Production student from Stratford-upon-Avon College is celebrating after receiving an amazing apprenticeship offer from the BBC.
Lewis Hawkins, who has just completed his college course, will be beginning a Production Apprenticeship with the BBC Education Department in Salford. It is an 18-month fast track apprenticeship which will hopefully lead directly into a job upon completion.
Lewis will be working in Salford (pictured top left). He secured his position after excelling at College and taking on extra opportunities like working at the Commonwealth games (pictured bottom left)
Lewis applied for a number of opportunities as it was always his plan to continue to learn in a practical way after college. He comments: “The many media experiences I have had, and what I have learnt and experienced in college, meant I knew where I wanted to work within media. I wanted to get straight into the job instead of going to university and then trying to get a job in that role much later on.”
The BBC apprenticeship was one of the first he applied to, but he applied to a range to give himself the best opportunity in a competitive industry.
The applications for the apprenticeships were a challenge. Lewis comments: “After receiving some rejections and not hearing back from the BBC at first I was feeling quite defeated. But I continued progressing, and expanding my CV by doing things such as working as a runner.”
Lewis continuously displayed this determination throughout college, taking on a whole range of extra work to develop his skills. This included getting a place on the prestigious BFI Documentary course and working as a Floor Manager at this year’s Commonwealth Games.
With the apprenticeship secured, Lewis is excited to get started: “Overall I am most excited about being a part of the BBC, especially the education department, in a place like Media City. It is exactly what I have wanted since I knew I wanted to work in media.”
Congratulations Lewis on your amazing achievement!
