Business students from Stratford-upon-Avon College ventured into the workplace to learn about life in the hotel industry as they took a trip to the Stratford-upon-Avon Crowne Plaza.
Students at the college benefit from a range of work experience opportunities. The Crowne Plaza is a huge hotel as well as part of Valour Hospitality which is a global brand, so this trip delivered excellent insight for the students.
They were welcomed by General Manager, Robin Ford and HR Manager, Natalia Dainty who began by telling the students all about the hotel, how it is run, and how they progressed into their current roles.
Robin told the students what he loved about the work he has done: “Throughout my career I have worked with some amazing people who have all become friends over the years. Everyday has and continues to be an opportunity to learn and grow and I am fortunate to do the role which I do.”
The students then had the opportunity to ask questions before taking part in an interactive task about the hiring and interview process.
The students really enjoyed learning about the various roles available and hearing about Robin and Natalia’s experiences in the industry
They then went with Director of Sales and Marketing, Clare Galvin-Jones, on a tour of the hotel to see the range of spaces including a restaurant and function suites.
Natalia was so pleased to have the students visit: “It is wonderful to be able to support the local community and college. Also, it isn’t something people always see as a career. This is a business and there are a huge range of roles here with a good chance at progression, so it is great for the students to learn about the options available.”
Student Marjot Birdir enjoyed getting out of the classroom and into the workplace: “I really enjoy the work experience opportunities. It’s a lot better being able to go and see what you are learning about.” She also enjoyed learning about progression experiences from Robin and Natalia: “It was interesting to learn how they got to their current positions and their different career paths. Also, the different sides to the job; like travel opportunities!”
Student Cara Mackinnon also found it interesting: “I really enjoyed the tour and seeing how everything was run and comparing it to other businesses. It’s been great to experience everything first hand too.”
