Stratford-upon-Avon College recently took gold in the regional MEI Maths Challenge.
12 students from the College competed against 8 other college teams from across the region in a series of maths related challenges at Solihull College & University Centre’s Blossomfield Campus.
The MEI (Mathematics Education Innovation) challenge is for students retaking their Maths GCSE alongside their vocational course. It allows students to partake in challenges and activities designed to increase their confidence in maths related skills.

The team from Stratford-upon-Avon College won 2 out of the 3 categories as well as the overall trophy for receiving the highest overall score.
Alfie Vowles and Lily-Anna Day, who were part of the winning group, were delighted. Alfie commented: “It was tough, but we got the job done.”

Lily-Anna continued: “It was nice to work with others we don’t usually get to interact with. It’s given me confidence in my maths skills as I was able to work on lots of different areas of maths.”
Diontae Harness, who studies Level 2 Music Performance and Production, commented: “I was nervous, as I didn’t know what to expect at first but winning is a feeling that I don’t think will ever be replicated.”

Maths and English Programme Manager, Abigail Coton, commented: “I was seeing students smile who’d I’ve never seen smile in a maths-related way before. It was a great environment. This was some of the students first awards and getting it in maths was a real confidence boost that I hope they take into their exams.”
With maths GSCE re-sits fast approaching this will be a great boost of confidence and self-belief for the students involved.
