College trains staff as Mental Health First Aiders and Champions

8th July 2021

Stratford-upon-Avon College recently organised training for over 20 members of staff across three campuses to qualify them as Mental Health First Aiders and Mental Health Champions.

The members of staff, from various areas of the college including both support and curriculum teams, attended either a two-day Mental Health First Aid training at partner College Solihull College & University Centre’s Blossomfield Campus or a one-day Mental Health Champions training at Stratford-upon-Avon College.

Staff were trained across the College campuses and will be a welcome addition to the many services students can access

The training was delivered by Dr Diane Phimister who is a Registered Mental Health Nurse and the Director of Insights Mental Health Training and Consultancy ltd. The training is accredited by Mental Health First Aid England.

Delegates said the training was incredibly helpful for their roles and they took away some invaluable learning. They also had lots of time to reflect on their current practices and feel they have gained important skills in supporting the mental health needs of their students.

The college’s Mental Health Lead, Fathima Ashraff-Ali who organised the training commented: “I am confident the training will equip staff with the knowledge, skills and understanding in supporting their student’s mental health.”
