Stratford-upon-Avon College is responding to the growing demand in the local construction industry by launching two new full-time courses and several adult short courses set to start in September 2022.
The College has started work on a brand-new facility to host new courses including the Level 1 Diplomas in Electrical Installation and Plumbing.
Colleges across Coventry and Warwickshire have received government funding totalling more than £5 million as part of a pilot scheme to reshape technical skills training in the region. This portion of the Skills Development Fund is being delivered as part of the Coventry & Warwickshire Adult Learning Project, a collaboration between Stratford-upon-Avon College, WCG (Warwickshire College Group), Coventry College and NWSLC (North Warwickshire & South Leicestershire College), aiming to deliver skills for the future in our region.
The Plumbing and Electrical Installation courses will give students the opportunity to learn the core skills and knowledge needed in these trades. Students can then progress to higher level study, apprenticeships, and employment in the building services industry.
John Duffy, Assistant Principal for the STEAM faculty at the College, details why now is such a good time to learn these trades: “It’s the perfect time to get into building services. Business in this area is booming and because so much construction is happening, the supporting services like plumbing and electrical installation are also in high demand.”
Moreover, John has seen popularity in learning these trades rise exponentially at the College’s partner College, Solihull College & University Centre: “Our construction and building services courses have seen a significant increase in student applications in the past couple of years. There really has been massive growth and construction skills is our largest programme now at our Woodlands Campus.”
John also highlighted how the new facilities will give students the perfect launchpad into their construction career: “The students will benefit from brand new large workshops which reflect what they will find in industry. The staff leading the sessions are highly skilled and there will be a big focus on sustainable technology which will set students up for development in the industry.”
The College is hosting an Open Event on Wednesday 23rd March, from 5.30-8.00pm, where students coming to the end of their time at school will be able to find out more about the courses and chat with lecturers.
