Stratford-upon-Avon College has announced that Construction will be a new addition to its school leaver offer from September 2021. The full-time Level 1 Diploma in Basic Construction Skills is now open to applications.
Delivered by industry experienced staff, the one-year course will equip students with basic carpentry, bricklaying, and painting & decorating skills as well as employability skills. Students interested in a career in the construction industry and keen to gain knowledge of trade areas are encouraged to apply.
Director of Operations at the College, Alan Hastings, states: “We’ve identified local demand and a gap in the market with Stratford District Council outlining in their core strategy a target of at least 14,600 additional homes to be provided across the district, and large infrastructure projects taking place such as HS2. Training local people is a crucial part of the advanced construction skills that the industry will need over the coming years and we aim to cater to this local need.”
The new facilities at Stratford-upon-Avon College will be similar to the specialist workshops currently present at Solihull College & University Centre’s Woodlands campus as can be seen above
The building of the new construction centre is being supported with a grant from the Government’s Getting Building Fund through the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). The £760,000 grant will contribute to the brand-new Construction Centre and will also enhance creative and digital facilities.
Marion Plant, chair of the CWLEP’s Productivity and Skills Business Group, added: “The state-of-the-art facilities that are being funded through the Getting Building Fund will give young people a chance to learn in the best possible environment.
“It is vital we equip students will the skills which employers require to lay the foundations to drive forward our economy in the long-term and retain highly-skilled people in Coventry and Warwickshire.”
Upon completion of the course, determined students will have the opportunity to progress onto an apprenticeship in the industry or higher-level construction courses at Stratford’s college partner Solihull College & University Centre.
