Fashion students explore dangers of fast fashion

8th October 2024

Fashion students from Stratford-upon-Avon College have been learning how to navigate ethical fashion practices whilst being inspired by legendary artists as part of their latest unit.

Level 3 Fashion students have been investigating ethics and looking at the working practices of fashion brands. Students have been looking at where and how their clothes are made whilst exploring transparency within the industry.

As part of this research, students were tasked with making textile banners in the style of artist Tracy Emin. These banners were made in preparation for talks that will be taking place with a local climate charity who hope to display some of their work.

Through this topic, students can consider their choices as they progress into the industry. Fashion tutor, Louisa Figus, commented: “It’s important to understand how ethics affect the industry these students will be going into. Understanding how dangerous working conditions and working practices relate to fashion is vital for anyone wanting to enter the industry. It’s also important to raise awareness with the general public.”

Fashion student Luisa learnt a lot from this project and believes this knowledge will help her in the future. She commented: “A lot of people can die from making fabrics – something like 258 people in the last two years. It has encouraged me to do more research to know where things come from.”
