Foundation Learning students at Stratford-upon-Avon College got the college feeling Christmassy as they sold Christmas decorations as part of their enterprise project.
The students work on business projects to develop skills around enterprise: working to deadlines, budgeting, and production. Since it is Christmas, the students made it festive by creating a range of Christmas decorations and sold them to staff and fellow students on campus.
The students created pinecone Christmas trees, painted wooden and clay Christmas decorations and holly filled baubles. A key feature of this project was that the students used recycled materials from past projects, natural products like holly from around the college grounds, plus donated materials which ensured this project was environmentally friendly.
The students had to plan every aspect of the project including pricing, budgeting, and creating. To help with this process they went on a research trip to look at costing at local shop Hobbycraft. Any money made from the sale will go directly back into the students learning as they use it to fund their next business project in Easter; meaning the projects are completely self-funded.

The students enjoyed this project. Laura Bartley commented: “It’s been really good as we have been able to re-use and recycle so much for this project.” Olivia Cobb added: “I really enjoyed painting and glittering; I love being creative. It was a lovely way to spend time with the other students as Christmas is my favourite time of year, so I loved this project.”
Foundation Learning lecturer Nina Charles was incredibly proud of the students’ hard work: “The students have done a great job! They have worked independently and worked hard on every step of this project. This has enabled them to develop skills related to enterprise including budgeting, working to a deadline and time management. And to top it off it’s been wonderful tying it into Christmas!”
