Make Up students delve into the world of prosthetics

5th December 2023

Make Up for Stage & Screen students from Stratford-upon-Avon College received the chance to learn all about prosthetics recently at an industry event at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The students attended The Prosthetics Event 2023 which included demos, talks and advice from top film industry professionals, beautiful body art, extraordinary exhibits, exciting competitions and shopping with leading specialist retailers.

There were a range of top professionals in attendance, with this year’s special guest being Make Up Artist Ve Neill who has won three academy awards for Beetlejuice, Mrs Doubtfire and Ed Wood, alongside a whole host of other awards and nominations for her work in film and television.

The students had the chance to learn about and purchase products to build their make up kits and watch a range of demonstrations from industry experts creating some incredible looks including Dr Strange, Beetlejuice and a human spider.

Student Ella Charles really enjoyed the trip. She comments: “The was so much stuff to do. Lots of activities and loads of chances to learn through demos, plus there were university course stalls so there were chances to learn about potential future opportunities. My favourite bit of the day was watching the demonstration where they created the Beetlejuice make up and explained how they did it and what products they used.”

Beau Townhill added: “It was great to learn in a different environment. There was stuff we could take from the day and apply to our current work. For instance, we are learning about airbrushing in class, so this gave us the chance to see it being done professionally.”

Lecturer Charlotte Hollingworth detailed why the trip was a useful experience: “The trip supported their assessments in media make-up, their personal and professional development, as well as career aspirations. It was extremely beneficial to our students and provided direct links relevant to their study programme.”
