Royal Marine chef gives students cooking masterclass

26th March 2025

Uniformed Protective Services students from Stratford-upon-Avon College received a masterclass in cooking and life from a Royal Marines Sergeant recently.

Colour Sergeant (C/Sgt) Mike Beaton, the ‘Commando Chef,’ delivered an interactive presentation to our Level 2 and Level 3 UPS students about how young people can make minor changes to encourage a healthier lifestyle.

The students were able to learn about the importance of nutrition, develop culinary skills, and gain understanding of life in the Royal Marines and the Royal Navy.

C/Sgt Mike Beaton has spent 37 years serving in the Royal Marines and delivers presentations throughout the country to educate people on the importance of nutrition, discipline, and respect.

Students were also given the opportunity to ask Mike’s colleague Seth, a serving Royal Marine, questions about life as a touring Royal Marine commando. They found out about what they keep in their kit, the process of applying, and stories from times away.

This was a valuable and engaging opportunity for students to learn about different the career paths after leaving the College.

UPS Lecturer, Oliver Wilkins, commented: “The event was a huge success. The students had fun preparing their own lunch too! The plan is to host bigger events to other courses to promote healthy eating College wide.”
