Sport student brings home World Championship medal

A Sport student from Stratford-upon-Avon College has won a silver medal with Team GB at the Under 20s World Athletics Championship.

Joel Masters, from Chipping Campden, was part of the relay team who came second at the event in Peru over the summer.

Joel only began competing in athletics two years ago after performing well in a school competition. He commented: “Once I won the race everyone told me I should take it up.”

He took on that advice and began training ‘Bfit Today Track Academy,’ who are based Cheltenham. This is where he was selected for the GB team: “I did some races for the club and I was the fastest, so I got selected.”

In the last two years Joel has jetted off to numerous locations around the world. He also won silver in the 100m sprint in the U18 European Championship in Slovakia. Joel recognises how rare these opportunities are, he commented: “It’s cool as I get to see parts of the world for free basically.”

Not only has training 3 times a week helped Joel with his athletics, but his studies at the College have helped his performance and allowed him to become a better athlete. Joel remarked: “The stuff that I’m learning on my Sport course at College helps me to understand my body. We cover a lot of content, and I can apply that to my athletics training.”

Joel aims to continue winning medals as his career in athletics goes from strength to strength.
