A Sport student from Stratford-upon-Avon College is on a path to achieve his dream career of becoming a coach after being accepted on a degree course at university.
Tom Mowl, 17 from Warwick, is excited to be accepting an offer from Manchester Met University to start his Sports Coaching & Development degree.
Tom has always had a passion for sport and grew up playing football and rugby. However, after experiencing the effects of bad coaching, Tom actually stopped playing football: “I might still be playing if not for a bad coach.” This made him realise that he could be the person who makes a difference.
He chose to study at the College as when he came to visit the campus, he had a good feeling about the place, and has enjoyed his time ever since. He comments: “Studying Sport at college has been great. It has allowed me to meet new people and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. Plus, the course meant I had to undertake work experience placements. I have done a rugby placement and a placement with Redditch United and these have really supported my learning and allow me to practise skills practically.”
Tom also thanks the College for preparing him to apply for university: “The mix of theory learning, practical sessions and exams mirror what I will be doing at university. I would 100% recommend this course for anyone considering progressing to university.”
Sports lecturer, Enrique Cardenas, commented: “Tom’s inclusion in our Sports programme has been highly beneficial. His unwavering dedication and enthusiasm towards the course are commendable. The Level 3 programme has significantly bolstered his confidence and self-assurance in advancing to higher education. This is evident in the substantial improvement in his academic skills and results. His progress is a testament to the effectiveness of our programme and his personal commitment to academic excellence.”
Tom is excited to continue onto higher education. Manchester Met University has opportunities with lots of different sport clubs and learning opportunities overseas which he is excited to have the chance to take part in.
