Stratford-upon-Avon College recently celebrated Disabilities History Month by hosting an event to raise awareness for International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The College’s Student Enrichment team, alongside LGBT Student Rep, Aiobah Wellings, organised an event that brought attention to a range of disabilities, with interactive activities, leaflets, and opportunities to win freebies.
Aiobah, who studies Musical Theatre, worked closely alongside Grace and Sam from the team to organise this event. Activities consisted of students spelling their name in braille, using a screen reader to navigate the website, lip reading and more.
Eye health organisation ‘Eye Care’ came in to educate students on various kinds of sight loss and eye health. They also brought simulations to showcase what it is like to see with different kinds of eye loss.
Aiobah wanted to include as much representation as they could when organising the event: “It was important for me to have different disabilities represented through various tasks. I wanted the students to interact with the activities but still learn something.”
The Student Enrichment team work hard all year round to host as many events as they can to celebrate and raise awareness to several causes. Student Enrichment Manager, Grace Wynne Wilson, commented: “We feel it is important to celebrate diversity in the College and promote inclusivity. It’s powerful to have students lead these events, Aiobah worked really hard on this event, and we couldn’t be prouder!”
