Students at Stratford-upon-Avon College and partner college Solihull College & University Centre are celebrating their recent exam results with fantastic results across the board.
Students at the College who take their Maths and English GCSEs are a mixture of 16-19 year old learners who study the subjects alongside their main programme if they didn’t achieve at least a grade 4 in these subjects at secondary school, and adult learners (19+) who are looking to gain these qualifications to develop/ change their careers or pursue a pathway to higher education.
The Colleges are incredibly proud to celebrate the 394 students who achieved high grades in their GCSE English and Maths this year alongside their studies, especially since the national average of results was lower than previous years.
The students themselves were incredibly pleased. Student Danny Tyrer from Stratford-upon-Avon College took GCSEs alongside their Performing Arts course. They struggled with studying English and Maths when at school: “At school I didn’t enjoy studying Maths and English, for about a year we had no maths teacher and when we did, we didn’t get any form of support.”
However, taking GCSEs at college was a much more positive experience: “Studying my GCSEs alongside my college course was relatively easy, they didn’t interfere with each other at all. The support I got from my maths tutor especially was incredible, she really built a positive environment to learn in and because I was placed in a separate, smaller group I was able to have more personalised help.”
Danny is extremely pleased with the results – “It felt incredible to pass my exams this year, it proved to me that I’m capable and that I’m not the issue, my old school was.” After completing college, Danny hopes to go to drama school and pursue a course in stage combat.
One of Stratford-upon-Avon College’s adult learners took both the Maths and English GCSE and commented: “I chose to study at Stratford-upon-Avon College as it was convenient for me and I required my GCSEs to progress in my learning: specifically Math and English for my QTS (Qualified Teacher Status). I received a 9 in English and a 5 in Maths and I am very pleased with my results!”
College Principal, Rebecca Gater, commented: “It is great to see so many of our students being rewarded for their hard work and perseverance. The majority of our GCSE students did not achieve a high grade at secondary school for GCSE English and Maths, so it is wonderful to see them achieving and progressing to the next level of study or embarking on their careers. Their teachers are very proud of their progress and we all wish them every success.”
Congratulations to all students for their wonderful achievements!
