Tinsel Town comes to Stratford-upon-Avon

8th December 2023

Stratford-upon-Avon College is jingling its bells and decking the halls as it prepares to present Tinsel Town-upon-Avon: a 1950s inspired Christmas variety performance to bring in the festive season.

Students studying Backstage Production Arts, Musical Theatre and Dance will perform the festive variety show in the College’s Gordon Vallins Theatre. The show will include a range of performances including boom whacking elves, a parade of wooden toy soldiers, Christmas showgirls and Santa himself may even make an appearance!

The College is well-known for its performance showcases, with the end of year musical spectacular Musicals Rock being a popular event for the town. With Musicals Rock taking its final bow last academic year, the Performing Arts department wanted to take the opportunity to try a different performance format whist still producing a collaborative inter-departmental project.

After attending the famous Thursford Christmas Spectacular to watch several alumni in their Christmas performance, the Performing Arts staff were inspired to create their own Christmas Variety show.

To further spread Christmas cheer, the College is performing two free matinees of Tinsel Town-upon-Avon for local groups. Students from Holy Trinity Primary School and local residents from Hathaway Court will have the chance to come along for a festive frolic. Jackie Handy, Campus Co-ordinator is delighted the college is offering this opportunity: “We are so pleased to be able to bring a little Christmas magic for some of the local community. The residents from Hathaway Court are also able to invite family to the occasion so it is wonderful that this production is bringing family together this Christmas.”

Director Alex Dengate is excited to welcome audiences to this show: “This is a variety show which celebrates the golden era of Christmas and it has something for everyone – it’s got singing, dancing, comedy, mime and a few festive surprises! It is suitable for all ages and is a fun way to celebrate the season. Christmas is a time for community and we are so pleased to welcome audiences to the College this Christmas and hope to bring some cheer to all through this wonderful show.”

So, whether you have been naughty or nice this year, come along to Tinsel Town-upon-Avon, rock around the Christmas tree and have a wonderful Christmas time!
